VENICE - that most imporbable of cities

Doug and Terry

“To build a city where it is impossible to build a city is madness in itself, but to build there one of the most elegant and grandest of cities is the madness of genius.” Alexander Herzen.

We invite you to come and discover an extraordinarily remarkable city.

Venice is a place like no other - unique and evocative and guaranteed to enchant and beguile in equal measure. A city of poetry, of music, of beauty, of decadence, of art and creative wonder, of romance and love, it has left its indelible mark on generations of travellers.

Peggy Guggenheim remembers the city on the lagoon: “One always takes for granted that Venice is the ideal city for a honeymoon, but this is a serious error. Living in Venice, or simply visiting it, means to fall in love with it, and there is no space left in the heart for anything else”.

We will be there less for the romance, unfortunately, and more for the creative angst and toil.  Not only toil of course -   our endeavours will be interspersed with relaxing meals and stimulating conversations (we hope) around the tables of carefully chosen and authentic trattorias. You can be assured, we take our nourishment very seriously and we will avoid at all costs any restaurants where the menu is laminated and translated into six different languages.

VIDEO of VENICE TOUR December, 2018, with Terry Gibbins

December in Venice is likely to mean fog - a gift to photographers everywhere and so the locations will be selected each day depending on what the light and weather are doing, to make the very best use of our time. They will certainly include a visit to some of the islands, including Burano with its brightly painted houses.

We thought about including Bellini’s in Harry’s Bar as part of the itinerary but further investigation suggested that such an obvious, over-hyped experience was not necessarily in keeping with our philosophy as artists. Instead, we will visit the equally famous Skyline Bar in the pink-tinted Hilton Molino Stucky.

Housed in a former grain mill, and reached by shuttle service across the Giudecca Canal, it is  one of the most dramatic-looking buildings on Giudecca island (and that’s saying something in this city). Its glorious panoramic views of the southern lagoon will offer us wonderful photo opportunities as we sip our cocktail of choice while watching the sun slowly disappear beyond the horizon.

HOTEL ALA

We will be staying in the charming and family owned and run Ala Hotel, in the ancient heart of Venice, just a few steps from St Mark’s Square. As always our emphasis is on a small group (max. 10) and our objective is the creation of images that are neither derivative, cliched nor a rehash of what has been done so many times before.

Our tour begins at around midday on Monday 30th November at St Marco Polo airport. We will travel to our hotel in style by private water taxi which will  speed us across the most fascinating waterway in the world - The Grand Canal, under the Rialto Bridge, then along the quieter, smaller, canals to our hotel.
